In the area where I live, the two land-grant universities (Washington State University and University of Idaho) are the two largest employers. When my son was a toddler, I returned to school at UI to finish my bachelor's degree in public communications. WSU's administrative policy office was the first to offer me a job after I graduated and I was extremely fortunate to come into a job that suited my skills and for which I've been able to make a contribution. I think that working for this office has given me the best opportunities to really learn how a university operates in all its various details.
I've found ACUPA to be an affirming and valuable resource -- it's been wonderful to be able to connect with others to find this work to be interesting and even fun. I wanted to join the Board because I believe in stepping up and lending my talents so that ACUPA can continue to grow and provide encouragement, assistance, and support to others in our industry.
I just moderated one of the virtual ACUPA 2020 Conference webinars yesterday as a member of the Education Committee. And as the newly-elected Vice Chair for Administration and new member of the Blog Committee, I'm working on getting a handle on my new duties and responsibilities.
The Bear Research, Education, and Conservation Center at our Pullman campus is the only grizzly bear research center of its kind in the U.S. The center recently installed a man-made cave to give the bears something novel to explore in their exercise yard.
