In what year did you begin working with higher education policy administration?

2010

What drew you to working in higher education?

I worked in University Relations at UND when I was an undergraduate student and my boss and colleagues encouraged me to apply for jobs with the University upon graduation. It took me seven years to find the right job at UND and the rest is history. It's the campus. The environment. The people. The job itself. I'm fortunate to work in a division where we treat each other like family. We work hard to do the right things for the right reasons, putting the University on a positive trajectory to ensure it is here for students, employees and the greater community/region for years to come.

Why did you become an ACUPA member?

I joined ACUPA after attending the Cornell Policy Development program in an effort to understand and expand my new role as a policy administrator. While I had a background in writing, I had zero experience with policy development or maintenance.

What do you find most beneficial from your membership?

ACUPA is likely the most beneficial professional organization in which I've been a member. Members are readily available to share their knowledge, expertise and policy examples whether that's in the Forums, at webinars or the conference, or via phone or email. It's a community that truly strives to promote continuous learning and collaboration among policy professionals. I've had the opportunity to participate on committees and the board of directors and can attest to the passion these volunteer leaders have in making ACUPA the premier professional association that focuses on the needs of policy administrators at institutions of higher education.

What are the main policy issues you are working on?

Give us a fun fact about your institution.

University of North Dakota Points of Pride:

  • The University has seen a $400M+ investment in campus renewal with limited state funds. This includes a new student union ($80M), college of business ($70M), P3 steam plant, and major renovations to the library, graduate center and University Avenue corridor.
  • Since its founding in 1970, the UND Writers Conference has brought more than 300 of the most influential authors in contemporary literature to Grand Forks, including 35 Pulitzer Prize winners and four Nobel Laureates.
  • The men’s hockey team has won the NCAA Division I National Championship title eight times. The team plays in the $110 million Ralph Engelstad Arena, which is considered the crown jewel of collegiate hockey arenas.
